MEET THE PUPPET TEAM

On this web page you will begin to meet the people God is using to continue to break down my walls of isolation as he uses them to force me to move from my cave into public ministry again, beginning with the love of my life, the lady in red above, Dorena Hyatt, followed by the puppets on the right, Emily, Eddie, Cindy and Hosea. Then our newest puppets. Our new stage. Next is Travis Roddy, Dorena's grandson pictured at a family birthday party. Travis is the puppeteer and voice for both Eddie and Hosea. Travis is followed by Caitlin, in white, and Kylee, in yellow, Wilt, Dorena's granddaughters and the puppeteers and voices for Emily and Cindy. Next are two pictures of me being hoodwinked by Dorena to speak at a Ladies Conference she put together in 2010. My part in the puppet ministry includes putting together sound effects and songs that follow and fit into the shows we do. The shows last about an hour and include three skits, so getting all the sound effects and songs to fall into the right places in the skits was a challenge. Dorena told me what she wanted, like thunder, or farm sounds like animals or a tractor and where she wanted the songs she and I chose to transition from one skit to the next. I had absolutely no clue how to make all of that happen, so I prayed and did some research and found a really nice and free sound editing program for the computer online. Once I had that I began searching online sound effects libraries and found all the effects we needed. They were very short sound clips, about 5 seconds each, so I had a lot of editing to do and in the beginning felt overwhelmed because Dorena was already booking us to do shows and I was just taking my first baby steps in getting everything just right. While I toiled away with getting the sounds and songs edited and layered just right so as one faded another began, Dorena was a whirlwind of activity making sure we had the scenery, making copies of the skits and a flow chart of how the programs would flow and a flow chart of where and when each sound or song would appear. Dorena had a local artist paint the scenery on large sheets of cardboard while she made hats for the puppets and flowers to sit randomly among the scenery. Everything was finally finished two days before our fist show. We were able to do one rehearsal at the church the night before the show, and to be honest with you, it did not go well. The kids had issues with the scenery and where and how they would make the puppets come alive for the Lord. Everyone was cranky, things were tense and unorganized and it showed. We were all convinced our first show was going to be a disaster, so we did the only thing that made sense to me at the time, we prayed. The next day the show went on and as I ran the sound for the show I sat there in tears at how well the kids played their parts and how enthralled the audience was with the Word of God coming forth in the message of the skits from the puppets. God  had given Dorena a vision for a puppet ministry. I thought she was nuts until the first puppets arrived and Dorena brought Emily and Hosea to life for me. I began to believe. In the end, God brought it all together perfectly and taught me to trust him more through Dorena and the kids. Dorena is a multi faceted multi talented individual, and I am blessed beyond words to have her in my life.

Meeting Dorena has turned my life upside down. She has been a huge inspiration to me, a tremendous blessing, and at times a challenge so severe that I find myself standing in the middle of a room with my eyes spinning and smoke pouring from my ears having a conversation with myself about what I did wrong this time. But she loves the Lord deeply and is about her Father's work daily. She leads, or participates in four Bible studies during the spring, summer and early fall seasons until the weather gets too bad. At the time I met her she also was working part time at the local library, was a tier two ombudsman volunteer for the Area Agency On Aging, an Apprise counselor, also for The Area Agency On Aging, a mother to four grown children and a grandmother to 10 grandchildren.

A Sincere HeartThe Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s Deputy Secretary, Ray Prushnak, presents the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award to RSVP volunteer Dorena Hyatt for her service as an Apprise Counselor in Somerset County in the Meyersdale area. The State Coordinator of Apprise, Darlene Sampson, is pictured at the podium. Hyatt was also recognized for the most volunteer hours and for having 10 years of service here. The presentation was made on May 4 in Greensburg at the annual recognition luncheon for volunteers from the southwest region that encompasses nine counties.

Dear Dorrie,

I so enjoyed your training at Somerset. I had the chance to speak on behalf of the Ombudsman recently and I wanted to express my personal feelings. Staff felt I expressed what an Ombudsman's mission is to a tee and encouraged me to send this information to you. My fiancée took my feelings and composed a poem on what an ombudsman mission is. Maybe you will like it to.

The Ombudsman

We volunteer to serve, heeding inner calls
Reaching out to the wounded, lost behind the walls
We seek to be a light, when darkness overwhelms
Something in our hearts, draw us to the helm!

We seek to serve the hurting, with honor, to defend
We seek to serve the staff, to help them be a friend
We seek to serve the lonely, when the family seems quite lost
We want the best for everyone, and seek it at all cost!
